Dog season!

Now that the weather has been warming up, we've all been spending a lot more time outside in the sun.  It certainly appears that a lot of our friendly dogs have been enjoying the weather, too.  You've probably noticed quite a few of them out and about.  They've been catching Frisbees, chasing butterflies, and playing with their friends.  If you own a dog, you've probably gotten more opportunities to take them out for much longer walks.

Whether you have a particular breed or not, we have plenty of  informative books about raising dogs, training dogs, and keeping them happy and healthy.  If you want to read a fun story that involves dogs, we have plenty of those too!  Either way, come down to the library and feel free to tell us all about your pet!

With baseball season under way, it seems like a good time to remind you that we have many neat fiction books involving baseball.  If you'd like to learn more about the sport, as well as learn about some of the famous players over the years, we've got those books too!

It's Spring?

It may not feel like it, but Spring has finally sprung.  We have had a few days of nice weather so far.  The ground might be a bit too frozen for some of our favorite plants.  The birds and other animals are starting to stir in the morning a little bit more.  However, it isn't too soon to read some Spring stories and learn about the season.  If you'd like some information about what the season will bring, click here.  If you would prefer to read some fun stories about Spring, click here.  It won't be long until we are spending the early evening enjoying the outdoors!

Muppets Most Wanted...

While we wait (or hope) for Spring to arrive there is a new Muppet movie coming out in theatres.  Looking at the picture, it appears that all of our favorite characters will be in it!  Keep in mind that if you don't think you'll get a chance to make it to the theatre, we have plenty of Muppet DVD's at the library, waiting to be checked out!

Cartoons...

We have noticed that a lot of patrons visit us and ask for cartons on DVD, as well as books including their favorite cartoon characters.  Scooby-Doo is a good example of this.  It's always fun to read about your favorite animated series.  You often learn more about the characters, as well as get to enjoy some further adventures that you wouldn't have otherwise known about.  If you want to see "everything" we own about Scooby-Doo, click here.  If there is another show that you were hoping to find in book format, please visit us and let us know what you are looking for.  There's a good chance we'll be able to help!

The perfect time to start a new series!

http://hpl.iii.com/search~S1?/tmaze+of+bones/tmaze+of+bones/1%2C2%2C4%2CB/frameset&FF=tmaze+of+bones&2%2C%2C3

Are you struggling to find something to read?  Have you recently read a great book, but didn't know what to pick next?  Finding a great series can solve these problems.  If you like the first book, you don't have to struggle looking for something to read for quite a while.  All that you have to do is continue along with the adventure.  With the constant snow falling (perhaps you may have noticed!), I'm guessing that entertaining books are at a premium...with that in mind, here are a pair of recommendations!

The 39 Clues series follows brother and sister, Dan and Amy Cahill in a global adventure.  Per the wishes of their grandmothers' will, they race fellow family members in a quest to uncover clues to a family "secret" offering great power and wealth.  Each book is written by a different prominent author.  If you like mystery, adventure and history you may want to start with book one, The Maze of Bones.

The Red Pyramid is the first book in the Kane Chronicles series.  You may have heard of the author, Rick Riordan.  He wrote another very popular series for tweens and teens called Percy Jackson and the Olympians.   The Kane Chronicles follows Carter and Sadie Kane on a dangerous global journey following the release of an Egyptian god.  Along the way, Carter and Sadie also uncover information regarding their family lineage and history.  This is another series for those who enjoy adventure and globe trotting.

Of course there are many other great series that we would be more than happy to tell you about.  Ask a librarian the next time you visit!

Winter Reading Club

http://hpl.iii.com/record=g1001253~S1

If you are already spending time during these very cold (and very snowy) winter days by reading fun stories and going on page-turning adventures, I think there is an upcoming program for you!  The 2014 Winter Reading Club, Fetch a Good Book, begins on Saturday, February 1st.  Head down to the library on that day to receive your start-up kit.  You can record the books you read and gain an invite to a very special celebration in March.  Hopefully the snow will be melted by then!  Don't forget, if you are looking for a great book to start reading, ask a librarian to help you find one!

When it's somehow even colder outside...

http://hpl.iii.com/record=b1062602~S1

If you've gone outside lately and managed to *not turn into an icicle, I commend you.  Sometimes I wish I could be the bear in Karma Wilson's excellent Bear Snores On, happily snoozing away the winter months waiting to roll out of bed sometime in the early Spring.  Unfortunately, this is not an option.  A librarian like myself can keep quite busy in the Winter.  When it's too cold to be outside, reading a good book is often the absolute best option.  I've seen many patrons come in lately carrying stacks of fun titles out the door with hopes of getting lost in an adventure (and a mug of hot chocolate).  If you are staring out the frost covered window, remember that Percy Jackson, Frog and Toad, Angelina Ballerina and all of your other favorite characters are waiting to keep you entertained...and I'm guessing that the hot chocolate won't be far behind.
