Newberry Medal Winner...

The Newberry Medal winner for 2012 is Dead End in Norvelt, by Jack Gantos. The Newberry medal, according to the American Library Association, is awarded "to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children." This translates to "you should read this book, because it is a really well written story..." The book follows 12-year old Jack and his interesting activities during the summer of 1962. This is a particularly good read for boys of a similar age. Click here to place the title on hold!

Two other titles were given the status of being "honor books." They are the following (click on the title to place your hold on them):

Inside Out and Back Again, by Thanhha Lai

Remember, it is great to read books that have received accolades and determine whether or not you agree with the hub-a-loo. However, it is also great to read books that you personally like! Either way, happy reading!

2012 Caldecott Medal...

Congratulations to A Ball for Daisy, by Chris Raschka for winning the 2012 Caldecott Medal!!! According to the American Library Association, the medal "is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children." What this means, really, is that A Ball for Daisy is a really awesome picture book with particularly fantastic illustrations...and that you should read it now! It tells the heartwarming story of a dog named Daisy and her relationship with her favorite toy ball... Click here to check it out!

Three other titles were given the distinction of "honor" books. This means that they were also considered to be exceptionally illustrated, but not the "top dog!" They are...

Grandpa Green, by Lane Smith

Me...Jane, by Patrick McDonnell

Congratulations to all of these books, especially their creators!!! You should check them out and decide for yourself which one deserves to be the winner!!!

The winter cold...

Mid-January is upon us, which can only mean one thing! Everyone knows someone...who is sick. It might be the sniffles or the sneezes or the coughs that have got you down. We've all been there, and many of us are "there" right now. So if you're spending a lot of time with tissues and soup and cough medicine, we understand! If you'd like to read some stories about having a cold, sift through your options by clicking here.

Remember...we all get a cold sometimes...even dinosaurs.

The Stars in the Sky!

During a full moon recently, I was reminded that there are some wonderful opportunities to star-gaze during the winter. Sometimes we get caught up in the cold weather and forget that it's still ok to go outside. (Just remember your jacket! and gloves! and a hat! and a scarf! and a hot chocolate too!) If you're feeling cooped up at night and want to get some fresh air, than a few minutes of constellation searching may be just what you need.

Before you head outside and try your luck finding cool stuff in the night's sky, I recommend you grab some books to help.
Click here to search our collection.
When you head back inside, a good story might help warm you up from your star gazing experience. You'll probably be in the mood for a good winter themed story. Click here for books on all things winter, including sleigh-riding, snowmen, winter snowstorms etc...
Enjoy your winter stargazing!

Winter is here...now what!

For those of you that have ventured outside today, if even for a minute, it is clear that winter has arrived. While it has technically been winter for quite some time, it hasn't really felt like winter. The frost, however, is upon us. So what does that mean for us? Well...finding fun indoor activities becomes significantly more important! Luckily for you, the library offers just what you need to cure those winter blues.

Our programs are one way to get yourself out of the house, but also out of the cold. Whether its a craft, a story time, or a movie, a fun library program can be just what you need to liven up a cold winter's day! Remember, registration for our winter programs begins January 9th.

Many of you have probably participated in the Winter Reading Club in the past. As a reminder, it begins on January 29th with a fun kick-off celebration! The Winter Reading Club is a fun way to read books, get fun prizes, and interact with all of your library friends! I don't know about you, but by late January I'm really looking for something fun to do!

I had to bring up homework! We have tons of resources to help you execute research for a report, write a biography, detail a map, or complete whatever your assignment may be. Many of our patrons visit us after school during the week , as well as on the weekends to work on their projects.

If you just happen to find a cool book to read during your visit, I won't tell anyone! Don't forget that we have large collections of movies, audiobooks, picture books, cookbooks, crafting books, and items covering any other topic you may be curious about! Start a winter hobby by searching here!

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Happy New Year!

Let me start out by saying how nice it's been to see so many of you visiting during the holiday week! I've seen lots of patrons checking out book and movies...I've even spotted a few of you getting a head start on those homework assignments! As we look towards 2012, it might be fun to think about what our New Year's Resolutions will be...

Some of you may wisely resolve to read more books!!!! Luckily, it is never possible to read too many! In which case you should
click here and search for some cool titles! If you can't think of anything, I strongly suggest you put on your hat and gloves and visit your librarians ASAP!

You may resolve to learn a new hobbie. I have noticed quite a few of you asking for books about crocheting...
click here to check out a few of them!

If you are resolving to learn more about recycling, "going green," or just understanding the steps you can take to improve the earth's ecosytem, then we have the books for you!

Whatever your resolution may be, there's a good chance we have the information you need to learn all about it. Enjoy the rest of your holiday break and be sure to stop in and say hello!
